Member Role Expectations and Behavior Expectations

The following list of role expectations and behaviors is meant to be an informal ‘job description’ for Shalimar Association board membership. The intention is to help existing and future board members better understand what is expected of them to support a successful campaign to Save Shalimar.

Role Expectations

  • Board members should attend all board and committee meetings and functions, such as special events.
  • Be informed about the organization’s mission and vision. Understand and be able to accurately communicate key talking points that support the vision and mission.
  • Be prepared. Review agenda and supporting materials prior to board and committee meetings. Review and understand the organization’s financial documents. Assist in financial decision making and planning.
  • Participate in strategic plans, identify and manage risks as well as opportunities, and take steps to advance the organization’s mission and goals.

Leadership Expectations

  • Demonstrate your willingness to step up and lead efforts big and small.
  • Represent the Shalimar Association and the greater Shalimar Community and support/make decisions that further the cause.
  • As assigned, oversee the successful planning, organizing and execution of focused efforts including events, communications, and public meetings.
  • Identify resource needs and actively recruit resources required for task execution.
  • Communicate directly through appropriate modes (in-person, phone, email, and text). Contribute as needed to association newsletters, websites, social media, and other modes (bulletin boards, delivering flyers/handouts, etc.). Prepare and present reports/status as needed on assignments to the board.

Behavior Expectations

  • Act ethically. Bias towards action. Focus on the critical few, versus the trivial many.
  • Be transparent. Disclose conflicts of interest should they arise. Make decisions in the Shalimar Association and Shalimar community’s best interest, without personal biases or hidden agendas.
  • Be respectful. Listen with empathy. Foster a positive environment. Communicate openly with accurate information to board members, community members, supporters, and skeptics, too.
  • Make informed decisions. Board members should research, gather, and discuss relevant information before making decisions.
  • Be financially astute and budget/cost conscious. Board members should understand financial reports, budgets, and the impact of decision making with regards to short-term tactical and long-term strategic plans.
  • Be a good problem solver. Disagree and commit. Do not let perfect be the roadblock to better. Board members should address disputes and resolve conflicts in a timely and amicable manner.
  • Be accountable. Board members are responsible for their actions and decisions. Hold yourself accountable as well as other board members.
